Carving Seminar Oct.31-Nov.1 with Roger Stegall

Roger Stegall will be holding a two day carving seminar at his shop in Mayflower on Oct.31-Nov.1. Attached are photos of the projects that will be available. I believe the cost is $40 plus the cost of whatever blanks you purchase. The class size will be limited, so sign up early! Call Roger at 501-912-5986 or email him at r-k19@att.net . I hope the club can also meet on October 17 for a regular meeting, but checking on a place to meet first. Will keep you posted!

Here are directions to Roger's house:
Address is 19 Starlite Road S, Mayflower.

Directions: Take 1-40 towards Conway, take the Mayflower exit at light, turn left (cross back over the interstate) to dead end (365) and at light turn left.  You will pass a diner, grocery store, sonic, then turn right at the light (Hwy 89 at the Baptist Church)  Go two blocks, cross the RR track and take an immediate right on to North Main Street (it goes directly beside the RR tracks)  Go about 2 blocks to a large rock sign (Northwoods) turn left in the neighborhood, take the first left onto Starlite S, the 5th house on the left (red brick). Parking in our drive and on the street.

Call with any questions: Roger 501-912-5986.

North Arkansas Woodcarvers show

I had a great time in Mountain Home this weekend, despite managing to catch a cold. Roger Stegal also had a table and we both did well in the competitions. We were also surprised to see some other members of the club visiting the show. Dwayne Kennedy, Jay Weaver, and Vernon Driscoll all made the trip up . Roger won four blue ribbons and I know at least two third places, in addition to winning the carving contest on Sunday! Woohoo! I got two blues, three reds, and three thirds, but my little bulldog also got third Best in Show and "Baby Fishing" was picked for the CCA Merit award. So our small club did pretty well! It was a lot of fun to talk with people about our carvings and meet a lot of well known carvers who were there. Adina Huckins was the judge and Sandy Smith and Randy Landen from the CCA were there. We saw Harold Enlow and his wife Elaine, Dale Heinecke and his wife Robin, and Larry Yudis had plenty of tools and stuff for sell. And Roger talked with Mike Shipley a bit!

Here's a few pictures!

April Meeting

The club will meet Saturday April 18th 9-12ish at the First Electric Building in Jacksonville. Roger will do a magic trick by transforming the blanks used last month to carve a witch, into blanks for carving a wizard this month! Abbracadabbra! Hope to see everyone there next Saturday and be sure to bring anything you've completed or have been working on for sharing with everyone.

March Meeting

Hopefully everyone has made it through all the snow and ice in good health! The next meeting of the carving club will be Saturday, March 21st, 9-12, at the First Electric building in Jacksonville. Roger Stegall will be providing the carving project. He's teaching a little witch figure, carved from a 1x1 about 3 inches long, and I believe it can be mostly done with only a knife! And be sure to bring things for show & tell; it doesn't take much to impress us (we're happy if you just bring yourself)! Here are some directions, just in case you forgot!

First Electric Building
1000 South JP Wright Loop Road, Jacksonville, AR

If you are coming from Little Rock, take 67/167 north toward Jacksonville. Take the first Jacksonville exit, Redmond Road (exit 8) and stay to the right. You will cross some railroad tracks and then go through a traffic light. (The road turns into West Trickey Lane and the AR-294/Military Road) . You'll pass a park on the right and after a couple of miles, you'll come to South JP Wright Loop Road on the left. There is a gas station (BP?) on the corner where you turn. The First Electric building is about a half mile on the right. Just park in front and go through the main entrance. We meet in the conference room right behind the reception area.

I may not be there, since my grandson will arrive on the 17th!  But here is the snowman I worked on at the last meeting! I'm real happy to be through carving on him!

February Meeting

Hated that most of ya'll were not able to make it to the meeting at Roger's house, but you might be wiser than those that did come! The rain was nasty enough that I was thinking I might need a boat! But we had a good time! Roger had quite a few carvings and Fred returned with a bunch from Florida. He was lucky enough to get into a seminar with Floyd Rhadigan while he was down there and had a great time.Jay Weaver brought some turned cylinders a pattern for some little snowmen that we made an attempt at. We were fortunate that he had knocked some of the wood off for us..... this was the kind off basswood that will last you a long time! As Roger said, it was a good warm up! We should be able to meet at the co-op in Jacksonville next month and Roger will provide the project of the little witch that can be carved with just a knife.  I'll keep you posted, but here are a few pictures showing what you missed!

Happy New Year to all! Fred is going to be tanning on the beach down in Florida, so we'll hold the January meeting on the 17th, 9 am-12ish, at the church in Sherwood. The address is:

First Christian Church of Sherwood, 2803 East Kiehl Avenue, Sherwood, AR 72120. Just park behind the main building and enter through the rear door on the west end of the building.

Bring any carvings you would like for show & tell, or anything that you would like to work on or need help with. I have about 13 little bunny rough outs from Harold Enlow that are about an inch square and two inches tall that are a fun little carving we can work on. They can be easily carved with just a knife, but a small gouge and a small skew are useful for some areas.

Two ladies from church that are just starting to carve have said they would be there, and we may have a couple of more new carvers in addition to them, so I'm hoping it will be a good meeting. See ya on the 17th!
